Outdoor Activities & Sports

Exploring on a bicycle is an unexpected and fun way to see Massachusetts. And our rail trails, which are former railway lines that have been converted to paths, are ideal for taking in all the sites and scenes.

Check out the New Balance Hubway, the Boston bike sharing system. Best of all, whether you're a novice or experienced cyclist, you'll find a wide variety of rail trails throughout the state to choose and discover. Pedal through salt marshes and pine woods on the 25-mile Cape Cod Rail Trail, formerly the Old Colony Railroad right-of-way. Check out Revolutionary War sites on the Minuteman Bikeway that starts in Cambridge and rolls right by Lexington Green. Cycle across the Connecticut River on an old Boston Maine bridge on the Norwottuck Rail Trail. And be sure to take your bikes to the Ashuwillticook Rail Trail, and enjoy the great views of Mt. Greylock and the Hoosac Mountain range. If you're into fixed base bicycle touring, try Ride Noho. In the Berkshires, check out Taking Shape via Indoor/Outdoor Fitness
