Winslow Homer: Making Art, Making History

Dates: Sun, Jun 9, 2013 ~ Sun, Sep 8, 2013
Times: 10:00 am to 5:00 pm

Description:
Sterling Clark declared that Winslow Homer (1836-1910) was one of the greatest artists of the nineteenth century. He acquired his first painting by Homer in 1915 and continued adding to the collection for a full four decades until the Clark opened in 1955. In addition to its quantity (nearly 250 works), the breadth and ambition of the Clark's collection make it the finest gathering of Homer's works put together by any individual since the artist's death. Winslow Homer: Making Art, Making History, by documenting the collection that Clark assembled and the ways in which the Institute has expanded and used that collection, will provide visitors the opportunity to explore Homer's achievement in depth and suggest new ways to think about old favorites among his works. The exhibition is curated by Marc Simpson, associate director of the Williams College Graduate Program in the History of Art and a scholar of nineteenth-century American art; a comprehensive catalogue of the Clark's Homer collection will be published in conjunction with the exhibition.
