Description:
Over 50 Living Historians representing Allied and Axis military are stepping out from the pages of history during the World War II Weekend being staged by Battleship Cove on Saturday and Sunday, September 3-4, 2011. Special programs scheduled throughout the day are FREE with paid admission and will take place rain or shine.
The Living Historians, all in uniform with their equipment and weapons, and alongside a display of WWII military vehicles, turn the focus of the war years on the servicemen who carried out the raids on the Axis powers, including the experiences of Navy Seabees on the Japanese-held island of Iwo Jima. Other presentations on topics of interest include the Marines in the Pacific, infantry troops in Europe and the experiences of a RAAF Lancaster pilot. The Lanc, as it was affectionately known, was the most famous and most successful of the WWII night bombers.
Battleship Cove's newest exhibit relives a significant moment during WWII that changed the course of history - the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor. The Pearl Harbor Experience, which opened in August, takes visitors back to the day that committed America to war. The only one of its kind in the museum world, the program uses archive film, special effects and surround-sound to create an immersive visualization of the events of December 7, 1941.
Battleship Cove is a nonprofit maritime heritage museum, comprising five National Historic Landmarks and the world's largest and most diverse collection of historic Naval ships.
