GREATER BOSTON & CAMBRIDGE

Greater Boston

Bike paths run along waterways and parkways of the Arnold Arboretum and Franklin Park, two of the six parks that make up Boston's Emerald Necklace.

Cambridge

A seventeen-mile loop comprises the Charles River Bikepath, scenically spanning from the Museum of Science west into Watertown. Get to know both sides of the river with bike rentals or narrated trips from Boston Bike Tours.

NORTH OF BOSTON & GREATER MERRIMACK VALLEY

North of Boston

Up north, Shore Road (Rte. 127) meanders around Cape Ann through Gloucester and Rockport. Explore the 19th century estate and gardens in Newburyport's Maudslay State Park.

Greater Merrimack Valley

Explore the leisurely 10.5-mile Minuteman Bikeway Rail Trail that spans Boston, Cambridge, Arlington, Lexington, and Bedford.

SOUTH OF BOSTON

Plymouth County

The Phoenix Bike Trail in Fairhaven runs from the saltwater-scented seashore all the way to Wareham. Myles Standish State Forest winds 15 miles through Plymouth and scenic South Carver.

Bristol County

Borderland State Park bikepaths run along the 1,570 acres of ponds, fields, and stone walls of the historic homestead and farm established in 1752.

CAPE COD & THE ISLANDS

Cape Cod

Cape Cod Rail Trail runs up the center of Cape Cod from Dennis to Wellfleet, a 25.1-mile odyssey. Encounter ponds and salt marshes as you ride directly into Nickerson State Park. Pedal along the 17.5-mile-long paved paths running along both sides of the Cape Cod Canal, which separates Cape Cod from the rest of Massachusetts.

Martha's Vineyard

On the Vineyard, bikepaths parallel most of the major roads since biking here is considered a real part of the island's transportation system. Plenty of bike rentals are available on island.

Nantucket Island

Nantucket Island's small size, flat terrain, and scenic beauty make it ideal for bicycling its 25 miles of bicycle paths, which are set apart from the roadways.

CENTRAL MASSACHUSETTS

The Blackstone Bikeway in Worcester is a three-mile stretch of the Central Massachusetts Rail Trail which, when complete, will run from Boston to Northampton. Douglas State Forest has paved and unpaved trails throughout its 4,640-acre preserve. And the Southern New England Trunkline Trail runs through Douglas, Uxbridge, Millville, Blackstone, Bellingham, and Franklin, totaling 22 miles.

WESTERN MASSACHUSETTS

Greater Springfield

Norwottuck Rail Trail twists 10 pleasurable miles through Northampton, Hadley, Amherst, and Belchertown. Windsor State Forest in Williamsburg offers paved and unpaved paths through its 1,743 wooded acres.

Franklin County/Mohawk Trail

Franklin County

Try the 3.6 mile Canalside Trail in Turners Falls for an easy, paved, flat trail or the 2.5 mile Greenfield Bikeway

The Berkshires/Mohawk Trail

Biking in the Berkshires is all about exploration. In the southern part of Berkshire county there are routes through the five communities of Lenox, Lee, Great Barrington, Stockbridge and Sheffield, all of them offering rolling hills and numerous points of interest. The Berkshire Bike Path Council (BBPC), in partnership with Housatonic Heritage, Berkshire Regional Planning Commission and the five South County towns - has produced a touring map, for cyclists that identify historic landmarks, tourist attractions and cultural destinations in this area.

In Adams be sure to take some time to enjoy the Ashuwillticook Trail, it has great views, meanders by the Cheshire Reservoir and ends in downtown Adams.
