Family fun awaits in the heart of the Commonwealth. Walk 40 feet high among the treetops or peruse exhibits at the EcoTarium indoor/outdoor museum. Try on a set of armor at the Higgins Armory Museum, where you can learn about the heroic legacies of medieval knights. Davis Farmland and is a bit more cuddly, with its petting zoo, children's museum and corn Mega Maza.
In the fall there are festivals throughout the region. Check out the Scarecrow and Harvest Festival at the Publick House in Sturbridge; North Quabbin Garlic and Arts Festival in Orange.
The Worcester Art Museum houses masterpieces by the likes of Cassatt, Gauguin, Monet, Sargent, and Whistler. Old Sturbridge Village, a living museum, depicts a rural 1830s New England town recreated in full. Or fast-forward 10 years to an 1840s utopian community at the Fruitlands Museum. But it is timeless Mother Nature that provides the exhibits at the Tower Hill Botanic Garden, including the 3,000-square-foot seasonal displays.
Central Massachusetts' influence on the Commonwealth is not forgotten here, either. The Blackstone River Valley National Heritage Area pays homage to the valley's rich industrial heritage and the Johnny Appleseed Trail commemorates the folk hero John Chapman, who planted trees throughout the region.
